Ecstatic Cacao: Heart-opening coffee and alcohol alternative

Ecstatic Cacao: Heart-opening coffee and alcohol alternative

We took the heart-opening ritual drink that's having a moment everywhere and added kanna + damiana, the mood-lifting duo behind our Ecstatic blend. The result is a non-alcoholic, adaptogenic hot cacao that actually does something — warm, grounding, and made with herbs that support connection and emotional ease instead of a sugar high.

How to make a kanna cacao at home

Recipe

  • 6 oz hot water (or milk of choice)
  • 2 tbsp ceremonial cacao
  • 2 ml Ecstatic ⟡ kanna + damiana (or any Altar Native blend)
  • 1 tbsp sweetener of choice
  • 1 dash of sea salt

Ritual Combine all ingredients in a small blender or frother and blend until smooth. Thank the plants and enjoy.

Cacao has been used as a ceremonial plant medicine for thousands of years. The Mayans and Aztecs called it the food of the gods and drank it not for an afternoon pick-me-up, but to open the heart before ritual, celebration, and connection. Cacao contains theobromine, a gentle stimulant that energizes without the jitters of caffeine, and anandamide, sometimes called the bliss molecule, which is part of why a cup of real cacao can feel so different from a cup of hot chocolate. It was functional long before "functional" became a wellness buzzword.

We kept the spirit of that and added kanna + damiana.

Kanna and damiana: the adaptogens that replace the buzz

Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent from South Africa, used for centuries by indigenous communities to ease tension and support emotional balance. It's known for bringing on a state of calm, clear-headed happiness — present, but relaxed. There seems to be a theme here: people reaching for plants that soften the edges without dulling the mind. That's data.

Damiana is a flowering shrub native to Central America with a long history as a mood enhancer and aphrodisiac. Together in Ecstatic, kanna and damiana create something that feels nothing like a sugar crash or a caffeine spike. It's more like a slow exhale. A softening. Warmth that has somewhere to go.

Plants are not alternative medicine, they're the original.
