Long Rhode: Tropical mocktail for caffeine-free energy & stress relief

Recipe for a delicious caffeine-free adaptogenic mocktail that increases energy while reducing stress

Stress down ↓ Energy up ↑

The recipe: Long Rhode

Recipe:

  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 2 oz water
  • ½ oz honey syrup
  • 2 ml Long Rhode herbal drops
  • Top with sparkling water (2-3 oz)

Ritual: Add pineapple juice, water, honey syrup, and Long Rhode to a glass with ice. Stir gently. Top with sparkling water. Garnish with pineapple wedge or mint.

For a sweeter/deeper flavor: Replace water with 2 more oz of pineapple juice.

Pro tip: Use raw honey in your honey syrup for extra minerals and enzymes. To make honey syrup, mix equal parts honey and warm water until dissolved.

Batch recipe for parties or meal prep

For a pitcher (8 servings):

  • 16 oz pineapple juice
  • 16 oz water (or replace with more pineapple for sweeter version)
  • 4 oz honey syrup
  • 16 ml Long Rhode

Mix everything in a pitcher. Serve over ice and top each glass with 2-3 oz sparkling water. Garnish with pineapple or mint.

You can also make a concentrated version (without the sparkling water) and keep it in the fridge. When you want a drink, pour 4-5 oz over ice and top with sparkling water. Instant functional beverage.

Variations to try

Tropical Long Rhode: Add coconut water instead of regular water for extra electrolytes and island vibes.

Tangy Long Rhode: Add a squeeze of lime or orange for more brightness.

Ginger Long Rhode: Muddle fresh ginger for a spicy, warming kick.

Frozen Long Rhode: Blend with ice for a slushy, frozen drink (perfect for summer).

The base recipe is a template. Adjust based on what your body needs and what sounds good.

Why pineapple and honey

Pineapple is bright, tropical, and naturally sweet. It also contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. The acidity of pineapple balances the earthy notes of the adaptogens, making the drink refreshing and approachable.

Honey adds sweetness and depth. It's also antimicrobial and contains trace minerals. Unlike refined sugar, honey provides sustained energy without spiking your blood sugar as dramatically.

Together, pineapple and honey create a flavor profile that's tropical, slightly tangy, and naturally sweet. It tastes like something you'd order at a beach bar. Except it's actually good for you.

The caffeine-free energy altarnative

Let's talk about caffeine.

Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors in your brain. Adenosine is what makes you feel tired. When you block it, you feel awake. Simple.

The problem? Adenosine doesn't go away. It just builds up. When the caffeine wears off, all that accumulated adenosine hits at once. That's the crash. Plus, caffeine activates your sympathetic nervous system, which means it's adding stress even while it's giving you energy.

If you're already stressed, caffeine often makes things worse. More anxiety. More jitters. More cortisol.

Adaptogens work differently. They don't block anything. They help your body produce energy more efficiently at the cellular level. They support your mitochondria (the energy factories in your cells) and help regulate your HPA axis (your stress control system).

The result? Sustained energy that doesn't spike and crash. Mental clarity without anxiety. The ability to keep going without feeling wired.

You don't need caffeine. You need your body to work better. That's what adaptogens do.

Perfect for midday or pre-workout

This drink shines in specific contexts:

Midday slump: It's 2pm. You're tired but you have four more hours of work. Coffee would make you jittery and you'd still crash later. The Long Rhode drink gives you sustained energy and focus without the downsides.

Pre-workout: You want energy for your workout but you don't want stimulants that spike your heart rate artificially. Adaptogens enhance physical performance and endurance naturally.

Stressful days: You're already activated. Your nervous system is in overdrive. The last thing you need is more stimulation. This drink gives you energy while simultaneously calming your stress response.

Travel: Long flights, long drives, time zone changes. You need to stay alert but you also need to keep your nervous system regulated. This is the drink.

Why it's called Long Rhode

The name comes from the blend, obviously. But it's also a philosophy.

Life is a long road. Not a sprint. Not a series of quick fixes and crashes. A sustained journey that requires endurance, resilience, and the ability to keep showing up even when it's hard.

Most of our coping mechanisms are designed for short-term relief. Coffee to wake up. Alcohol to wind down. Sugar for a quick boost. They work in the moment, but they don't serve the long game.

Adaptogens are different. They build capacity over time. They help you adapt to stress, not just avoid it. They support sustained energy, not just temporary spikes.

This drink is for people who are in it for the long haul. Who want to feel good not just today, but consistently. Who are building a life, not just getting through the day.
