Talk nerdy to me...

Kava (Piper methysticum)

Kava is rich in compounds called kavalactones, fat-soluble constituents that interact with the nervous system through multiple pathways at once. Rather than stimulating or sedating, kavalactones are studied for how they support calm signaling in the brain, particularly through modulation of GABA activity, the neurotransmitter system responsible for quieting excess neural noise.

What makes kava unique is that its effects are not driven by a single compound, but by the synergy of its primary kavalactones working together. This multi-target interaction is why kava is often described as relaxing without dulling awareness—supporting physical ease while preserving mental clarity.

Importantly, modern research and regulatory reassessments have shown that earlier safety concerns around kava were largely tied to non-traditional extracts made from stems or leaves and harsh solvents ~ not from traditionally prepared noble kava root. When sourced responsibly and extracted with care, noble kava has a very different safety profile.

In Altared, kava provides the grounded base, supporting relaxed focus, softened tension, and a sense of steadiness in the body that makes presence easier.

Damiana (Turnera diffusa)

Damiana is a flavonoid-rich plant traditionally used to support mood, pleasure, and embodied awareness. One of its most studied constituents is apigenin, a flavone also found in plants like chamomile, which has been researched for its interaction with pathways involved in stress response and emotional regulation.

Unlike stimulants that push the nervous system, damiana’s chemistry is more uplifting and smoothing ~ often described as brightening rather than energizing. Its effects are believed to come from the whole-plant matrix, where multiple phytochemicals work together rather than acting in isolation.

Damiana has also been explored for its antioxidant activity and its relationship to enzymes involved in mood and arousal ~ helping explain why it has long been associated with connection, creativity, and sensual presence rather than raw drive or intensity.

In Altared, damiana brings the feeling ~ a subtle warmth, emotional openness, and gentle lift that complements kava’s grounding effects.

Synergy

Altared is intentionally designed as a stack.

Kava supports the nervous system from the bottom up—quieting excess stimulation, softening physical tension, and creating a stable internal baseline. Damiana works more top-down ~ supporting mood, pleasure, and emotional tone.

Together, they create something neither plant does alone:

a state that feels calm but not flat, focused but not forced, relaxed yet engaged.

This is what we mean by flow ~ a nervous system that isn’t bracing or pushing, but available. Available for creativity, connection., and conversation. For being comfortable in the here and now.

Kava (Piper methysticum) + Damiana (Turnera diffusa)

Kava’s active compounds, called kavalactones, modulate GABA-A receptor activity while also influencing dopamine levels and blocking certain sodium and calcium channels. This creates a relaxed but alert state. Damiana complements this by gently increasing circulation and supporting acetylcholine activity for mental clarity. Triple extraction ensures maximum absorption of both fat- and water-soluble compounds.

FAQ

What does it feel like?

Altared is meant to take the edge off while supporting focus and flow.

Some people say it feels like one drink.

Everybody is different, so effects vary.

How do I use them?

Our tinctures are meant to be part of your routine – whether you're getting through the day, winding down, tuning in, or connecting with others.

You can:

  • Mix into your favorite mocktail or one of our recipes
  • Add to a drink like sparkling water, tea, cacao, juice or a smoothie
  • Drop directly on your tongue for quicker effects

Start with 1–2 dropperfuls and listen to your body.

I'm sober. Can I use this?

That's a very personal question only you can answer. What we can say is that our tinctures were crafted with the sober community in mind:

They don’t contain alcohol in an intoxicating amount (just enough as a natural preservative and extraction method) and they’re non-psychoactive, meaning they won’t get you high, drunk, or alter your consciousness.

Our drops are designed to help you feel more like yourself, not less. We have several customers in recovery who use our products as a tool for connection and relaxation.

However, if alcohol-based extracts are a trigger for you, then no, these drops are not a good fit.

Are there any dangers?

Every plant we use is legal and well-researched in the US.

Please review individual cautions below:

Altared (kava + damiana)

Avoid if taking sedatives, depressants, or alcohol. May cause drowsiness.

Most of the herbs we use (except schisandra) are generally not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding, however we believe a mother knows best and several BF mamas use our blends.

Can I use more than one blend in a day?

Absolutely. You can always layer blends throughout the day.

For example: Ecstatic in the morning, Long Rhode throughout the day, and Altared and/or Lucid in the evening.

Just start slow, listen to your body, and see what works for you.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects or adverse reactions are uncommon and typically mild, but may include digestive discomfort or temporary changes in mood or sensitivity, depending on the individual. Our blends are made with well-studied plants; however, if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a medical condition, we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before use.
