Introducing the Altarita: healthy a non-alcoholic, low-glycemic margarita alternative with adaptogens
This is one of our signature drinks, it's been on the menu at almost every event we ever catered. People love it because it tastes like a real margarita, it's refreshing, and it actually does something.
No tequila. No hangover. No regrets. Just plants that work with your nervous system instead of against it.

Make it your own
This recipe is a template. You can adjust based on your preferences:
Want it sweeter? Add more agave.
Want it more tart? Add more lime.
Want it lighter? Top with sparkling water or coconut water.
Want it spicy? Muddle jalapeño or add a dash of hot sauce.
Want it frozen? Blend with ice instead of shaking.
The base ratio (1 oz lime : 2 ml tincture : 3 oz liquid : ½ oz agave) works for almost any variation.
Traveling with your mocktail ritual
One of the best things about herbal tinctures? They travel.
Going to a party where everyone's drinking and you'd rather not? Bring your tincture. Traveling and want a margarita on the beach without the tequila? Pack your Altared. Hosting friends and want to offer a functional alternative? Make a pitcher of Magical Margs.
Tinctures are small, portable, TSA-friendly (under 3.4oz for carry-on), and don't require refrigeration. You can bring your ritual with you anywhere.
This is especially powerful for people who are sober, sober-curious, or just tired of how alcohol makes them feel. You're not sitting there with water while everyone else has cocktails. You have your own thing. Something that tastes good, feels good, and doesn't cost you.
Perfect for parties and events
We've served hundreds of these at events. Weddings, birthday parties, corporate gatherings, festivals. People who don't drink love them. People who do drink love them. People who are sober-curious love them.
They're easy to batch for crowds:
For a pitcher (8 servings):
- 8 oz fresh lime juice
- 16 ml Altared (or chosen blend)
- 24 oz water
- 4 oz agave syrup
Mix everything in a pitcher, serve over ice, garnish with lime. Done.
You can also set up a DIY marg bar where people choose their own blend. Put out Altared, Ecstatic, Lucid, and Long Rhode with labels explaining what each one does. Let people customize their experience. It becomes interactive, intentional, and way more interesting than a standard mocktail bar.
Why this margarita alternative works
The original recipe calls for Altared, our kava + damiana blend. The lime does a great job of masking kava's earthy taste, making it accessible even for people who are new to functional herbs. And here's a fun fact: fermented damiana was the liqueur used in the original margarita recipe. So using our damiana blend in a margarita isn't just functional, it's actually historically accurate.
But you can use any of our blends for this recipe depending on what you're going for:
Altared (Kava + Damiana): The classic choice. Social ease, evening calm, the full margarita-with-friends vibe.
Ecstatic (Kanna + Damiana): For mood elevation and emotional openness. Great for celebrating or when you want a lift.
Lucid (Blue Lotus): For connection and calm. Perfect for date nights or deeper conversations.
Long Rhode (Rhodiola + Schisandra): For stress resilience and mental clarity. The daytime functional marg.
Why lime is perfect for herbal tinctures
If you've ever tasted kava on its own, you know it's earthy. Some people love it. Others need help getting there. Lime is that help.
The acidity and brightness of lime juice cuts through the earthiness of kava (and most herbal tinctures) and makes the whole drink taste balanced and refreshing. It's the same reason traditional margaritas work so well: lime, agave, and a spirit create a perfect flavor profile.
In this case, the spirit is functional. The plants are doing the work. And the lime and agave makes it delicious.
The original margarita had damiana
Most people don't know this, but the original margarita recipe included damiana liqueur, not tequila.
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a plant native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It's been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac and mood enhancer. When fermented, it creates a liqueur with a slightly sweet, herbal flavor.
Some historians believe the margarita was created using damiana liqueur before triple sec became the standard. So when you make this non-alcoholic margarita with our Altared or Ecstatic blends (both of which contain damiana), you're actually closer to the original recipe than most tequila margaritas being made today.
That's not just a fun fact, it's reclaiming tradition.
Why this is better than a regular margarita
No hangover. You wake up hydrated, clear-headed, and energized. Not foggy and dehydrated.
Functional effects. Depending on which blend you use, you get social ease (kava), mood elevation (kanna), connection (blue lotus), or stress resilience (adaptogens). Tequila just gives you drunk.
No impairment. You can drive after this. Make good decisions. Show up fully in conversations. You're not chemically compromised.
Better for your body. Tequila taxes your liver, disrupts your sleep, and depletes your nutrients. Herbs support your nervous system, help you regulate stress, and don't cost you the next day.
The ritual matters
Here's what we've learned from serving thousands of these drinks: the ritual matters as much as the recipe.
The act of shaking the drink. Pouring it into a beautiful glass. Garnishing with intention. Thanking the plants.
It's not just about consuming a beverage. It's about marking a transition. From work to relaxation. From stress to ease. From being in your head to being in your body.
Alcohol has always been about ritual. The happy hour. The toast. The first sip that signals you're off the clock.
You can keep all of that. You just need better ingredients.
Why we created this
At Altar Native, we're not just offering alcohol alternatives. We're reimagining what it means to unwind, celebrate, and connect.
This magical marg recipe is part of that vision. It's accessible, delicious, and functional ~ gives people a way to participate in social rituals without compromising their wellbeing.
And it works! We've watched people's faces light up when they realize this tastes like a real margarita. We've heard countless times: "This is SO good."
That's the point. You shouldn't have to sacrifice flavor or experience to choose something better for your body.
